Important Question!
It's my understanding that early in our school career that there was either a
blacks only elementary school in Edmonson County, with the kids bussed to a
school in Warren County when they reached junior high or high school grades, or
that there was no black school and the kids were bussed to Warren County
throughout their school years. Is this so? If it is, this school or practice
came to an end sometime before we reached high school because we had a handful
of blacks in class with us. Does anyone have any knowledge or information about
this. If so, please e-mail me at dennisdparker@hotmail.com.
About the Elementary/Junior High Schools
The school system in Edmonson County has changed radically since we were
students. Members of our class attended a number of schools before moving to the
high school. Here are some of the differences:
Only one school is remains from our youth, while none of the
primary school buildings still stand. Kyrock Elementary School alone remains
in its original location with its original name. However, a few years ago
the old building was torn down and a new one built in it's place. Over the
years St. John, Chalybeate, and Lincoln fell by the wayside, with their
students being transferred to Kyrock and Brownsville. Finally, after the
1999-2000 school year Brownsville also ceased to exist. It's students were
transferred to the brand new South Edmonson Elementary School.
School children now start in Kindergarten, and have 13 years
of schooling. The grades are listed as K-12. When the Class of 1974 started
school in 1962 we started in 1st Grade, which was the norm then, and had 12
years of schooling in Grades 1-12.
Junior High School has also become just another part of History Class. The system used to be:
Elementary School | Grades 1-6 |
Junior High School | Grades 7-8 |
High School | Grades 9-12 |
Now, it looks like this:
Elementary School | Grades K-5 |
Middle School | Grades 6-8 |
High School | Grades 9-12 |
While the 6th Graders were no doubt glad to get the
"promotion" out of elementary, our old Junior High took the bench
in favor of the new Middle School concept.
That being said, the idea that "Junior High" was something special
and represented a change in the hierarchy was probably some in the minds of
us kids than in that of the principal and teachers. To them it was all the
same school, staff, administration, and offices.
