Brownsville Elementary School (1963)

This is Brownsville Elementary School in 1963, when the Class of 1974 was in the 1st Grade. The school changed much over the years, with modifications and additions to the grounds and, later, additions to the buildings. This photo was taken near the large tree that stood at the corner of the school grounds across from the Dairy Queen. It is interesting to note that even though the school was considered to be very modern at the time, it had no lunch room. As we well recall, at lunch time each class took it's turn in marching to the kitchen where we moved down the counter to get our food, returned to our rooms and ate at our desks. When lunch was over we returned to the kitchen to return our trays. In the back of the school can be seen the trees lining Washington Street, with street being just barely visible over the top of the school just left of center. This building conducted its last school year in 2000-2001. In the fall of 2001 the school was replaced by the new South Edmonson Elementary in Chalybeate.

Great thanks to Sheila Durbin (Sheila Ray in school) for providing the picture!
